Tobacco industry

The production of tobacco products can be divided into three steps: green leaf processing, in which the tobacco leaves are sorted and separated from the stalk, dried and pressed into bales; primary processing, in which the tobacco is cut, possibly flavored and blended; and secondary processing, which involves the manufacture and packaging of the cigarettes.

The properties of the tobacco as well as the processing temperature vary in the course of these steps. In order to convey the material reliably through all stages at all times, a large number of different and carefully tailored belts are required. Alphabelt timing and conveyor belts are designed for precisely such special cases. Individual solutions are our strength. The manufacture of unique products, including single-unit production, is our standard. From proven and innovative components, we develop high-performance solutions that meet the high demands of the tobacco industry.

Pyrolysis requirements and regulations on plastics for unpackaged foods

To ensure that during transport no undesirable substances are transferred from the belt material to the tobacco, the conveyor belts used in the tobacco industry must meet stringent pyrolysis requirements. This means that no substances such as chlorine, fluorine, nitrogen or sulfur may be released during combustion. Belts made of silicone, polyester or polyolefins meet this requirement. In addition, only materials that are approved for direct contact with food are considered. Our belts for the tobacco industry are certified in accordance with the EU and FDA regulations on plastics. Of course, corresponding declarations of conformity are available.

Good release characteristics

Moist tobacco poses a challenge due to its high adhesion. Conveyor belts must counteract this effect with the best release properties possible. Alphabelt is relying here on polyolefins that provide anti-adhesive properties. Due to the excellent product release, these conveyor belts are easy to clean.

Resistance to hydrolysis

Another advantage associated with surfaces made of polyolefins is their high resistance to hydrolysis. In humid, warm environments or when frequently cleaned, there is usually a risk of cracks or fractures in the cover layer and an associated reduction in mechanical strength. Timing belts that are resistant to hydrolysis are protected against such damage, which increases their service life enormously.

Optimized profiles

For inclined conveyors with angles above 20 degrees, we provide special profiles that significantly improve the grip properties compared to conventional surfaces. The profiles are available in various patterns and designs such as with round knobs, with ribs arranged lengthwise or staggered, or with grooves milled across the running direction.

Timing belt with cleats

Cleats in a wide variety of shapes and sizes can be excellently applied to timing belts, ensuring reliable, form-fitting transport of individual cigarettes, packs and larger packaging units.

Coated vacuum belts

Vacuum belts are mainly used in the automated packaging of cigarettes. They guarantee precise feeding of the packaging materials. Coatings specially matched to the transported goods provide very good conveying properties. In addition, a vacuum can be applied to support good adhesion even at high feeding speeds. The geometry of the vacuum pockets is available in any design according to the customer's requirements.
