Timing belts have long since ceased to be mere drive elements. At the latest since automation has found its way into the most diverse branches of industry, timing belts have become an indispensable part of production processes. But what actually gives timing belts such an interesting role as a transport element? And what are the possibilities provided by the latest refinement techniques.
Conveyor timing belts perform several functions at once
In industrial production, the trend is moving more and more towards automated manufacturing. Materials and goods must be conveyed continuously from one processing station to the next. The main logistical challenge is to precisely coordinate the feeding, transport and handling of the transported goods. Individual components or entire assemblies must be in the right place at exactly the right time, and often even in a specific orientation.
As a conveying element, the timing belt performs several functions at once. Equipped with refinement components that are precisely matched to the respective task, it is used, among other things, for separating, conveying, clocking, feeding, orienting, and positioning a broad range of goods. Due to the toothing, there is no slippage even at high speeds and outputs, which ensures maximum precision in parts positioning.
Advantages of timing belts used as conveying elements
Timing belts offer numerous advantageous properties that make them so ideal for their purpose as conveyor belts:
- They can be manufactured in just about any desired length.
- They also bridge longer distances.
- Equipped with appropriate tension cords, they remain nearly stable in length.
- In continuous operation, they are extremely low-maintenance.
- Their positive-locking, slip-free drive guarantees precise positioning and clocking even at high speeds.
- They offer a high degree of smooth running.
- They are cost-effective both to purchase and to operate.
- They can be equipped with a wide variety of features for special tasks by using a diverse range of finishing techniques.
- They ensure low-noise operation.
Versatile applications of conveyor timing belts
In the following examples, it will be illustrated how different conveyor timing belts can be equipped by specific refinement steps and for which special tasks they are thus suitable:
Operation in accumulation mode
Accumulation mode is used when the conveyor belt runs continuously but the flow of goods is repeatedly stopped temporarily. This is the case, for example, when feeding goods into a packaging machine. Constant stopping and restarting of the belt would not be practical here. Conveyor timing belts suitable for accumulation mode must be provided with a surface that is as smooth as possible and has low friction towards the product. In addition, the coating should include wear protection.
Use as a vacuum timing belt
A vacuum timing belt should have exactly the opposite properties. Here, the coating requires the highest possible coefficients of friction and good adhesion, for example, to reliably feed films into form-fill-seal machines. Depending on the application, this effect is reinforced by suction channels, perforations or milled pockets that generate suction when pressed against the conveyed goods.
Conveyance upwards and downwards
If the material is to be conveyed inclined upwards or downwards, it must be prevented from slipping off. The simplest option is provided by a coating with a high coefficient of friction. If this is not sufficient, coatings with profiled surfaces such as grooves, knobs or spikes are used. A form-fit conveying of piece goods and bulk materials is achieved by means of cams that are welded or bolted onto the conveyor belt.
The almost unlimited possibilities of timing belt refinement
The above examples are only a small selection of the wide range of applications that are opened up by modern refinement techniques. Conveyor timing belts are also available with approvals for food or pharmaceutical technology, for the transport of particularly heavy, hot or sensitive goods, with anti-adhesive, antistatic or chemical-resistant coatings, with several stacked layers and many other functions.
